Historical Background
The first Civil Services Day was observed on April 21, 2006 , under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh
The date was chosen because on April 21, 1947 Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel , India’s first Home Minister, addressed the first batch of IAS officers at Metcalfe House, Delhi
In his speech, Sardar Patel described civil servants as the Steel Frame of India” , emphasizing their critical role in maintaining unity and governance across the country.

Civil servants are selected through India’s highly competitive UPSC exams and work in services like:
IAS (Indian Administrative Service)
IPS (Indian Police Service)
IFS (Indian Foreign Service)
