RIP Creator of Chacha Chaudhury cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma dies

Eminent cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma, popularly known as Pran, who gave life to lovable comic characters Chacha Chaudhury and his friend Sabu died

Reason of death – Cancer
He had been suffering from cancer from past few months, and was admitted to a Gurgaon hospital for last days, where he died on early August 6, 2014

Age – 75

Pran passed away at 9 AM at the Medanta hospital. He had been suffering from cancer of the intestine for the past eight months. He is survived by a son and a daughter," Gulshan Rai, Publisher, Diamond Comics, told PTI.

He also created other characters like Shrimatiji, Pinki, Billoo, Raman, and Channie Chachi

Pran graduated with a BA from Gwalior and Master of Arts (Political Science) degree from evening Camp College, Delhi.
He then pursued a five-year course in Fine Arts from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai through distance as a private student while in Delhi, so that he could apply as a drawing teacher at schools, but he discontinued.

Pran began his career in 1960 as a cartoonist for the Delhi-based newspaper Milap with comic strip Daabu.
In 1969, Pran sketched Chacha Chaudhary for the Hindi magazine Lotpot, which made him famous.

He was included in People of the year 1995 by Limca Book of Records for popularizing comics in India.

Pran received a Lifetime Achievement Award 2001, from Indian Institute of Cartoonists.


Maurice Horn notes that Pran has been given the title of "Walt Disney of India" in The World Encyclopedia of Comics

The Chacha Chaudhary strips find permanent place in International Museum of Cartoon Art, USA.

Once cartoonist Pran struck upon an idea of a wise oldman who solves problems with his sharp intellect. Thus CHACHA CHAUDHARY was born in 1971. Tall and robust SABU, who is an inhabitant of planet Jupiter, gave Chaudhary an ideal company. A combination of wisdom and strength was formed to tackle any difficult task. It is said that “Chacha Chaudhary's brain works faster than a computer". Though both fight the criminals and tricksters, each episode ends with a touch of humour. The duo perform in lighter vein.

The CHAUDHARY family consists of his wife Bini, a fat sharp tongue woman, Sabu, Rocket - the dog and Dag- Dag, an old truck who is half human- half machine.

Chacha Chaudhary is the most popular Indian comics. More than 10 million readers enjoy this series regularly in newspapers and comic books in ten languages. A T.V. serial based on the comics has crossed 500 episodes and still continue to be telecast on premier channel "Sahara ONE".

Chacha Chowdhury was entertaining for wit and humour. It is sad that Pran is no more.
