Byomkesh Bakshi was one of Doordarshan’s most iconic detective serials, aired between 1993–1997, directed by Basu Chatterjee, and starring Rajit Kapur as Byomkesh and K.K. Raina as Ajit. 

It ran for 2 seasons with 32 episodes, each adapted from Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s detective stories. The show was retelecast in 2020 during the COVID19 lockdown due to popular demand.

Story & Approach

Byomkesh calls himself a “Satyanweshi” (truthseeker) rather than a detective.

Unlike Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot, he focuses on truth and justice, sometimes allowing perpetrators to face consequences outside the law.

Famous cases include Rastey Ka Kanta, Wasiyat, Quicksand (Ret Ka Daldal), Chiriya Ghar, and Amrit Ki Maut.

Each episode was adapted faithfully from Sharadindu’s original stories, maintaining the Bengali cultural backdrop while presented in Hindi.

The haunting background score became instantly recognizable and added to the suspenseful atmosphere.

Legacy

Widely regarded as India’s one of the best detective TV series, praised for its faithful adaptation, strong performances, and gripping storytelling.

Rajit Kapur’s portrayal of Byomkesh is considered definitive, much like Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes.
