Key Credit Order
1. Nasir Kazmi (Poet, 1950s–60s)
2. Tasawwar Khanum (First Singer, PTV 1970s)
3. Ghulam Ali (Classical Male Rendition, 1980s–90s)

1970s (PTV Era):
Tasawwar Khanum performs the ghazal on Pakistan Television (PTV).
This is the first popular sung version, broadcast to households, making her the one who brought the ghazal before the world.

1980s–1990s (Concert Era):
Ghulam Ali begins performing the ghazal in mehfils and concerts.
His classical, raag-based style gives the ghazal international recognition, especially in India.

2000s–Present:
Both versions circulate widely — Tasawwar Khanum’s PTV recording on YouTube, and Ghulam Ali’s concert renditions in ghazal collections.
The ghazal is now considered a shared heritage piece, with both singers credited: Tasawwar Khanum for first introduction, Ghulam Ali for later classical expansion.

Lyrics with English translation of Ghazal  Dil Mein Ek Lehr Si Uthi Hai Abhi Ghulam Ali

A wave has just risen in the heart

Some fresh breeze has just blown

We too are a little delicate in temperament

And this wound is also new just now

There is an uproar in the house of the heart

Some wall has just collapsed

The heart does not settle in this crowded world

Who knows what is missing just now

So what if you are not a partner in conversation

My companion in speech is your silence just now

From the unmarked islands of memory

Your voice is reaching me just now

In the unlit lanes of the city

Life is still searching for you

The people of that mansion have fallen asleep

Yet one window remains open just now

You, my friends, have already risen and left

While the night in the city is still awake

Good times will come too, Nasir

Do not grieve—life still lies ahead
