Visa Restriction Index Global Ranking Index Know which passport is best or worst for traveling
Global consulting firm Henley and Partners put together a list of the worst and best passports for international travel. The group analyzed visa regulations of all countries and territories in the world, ranking them based on the freedom of travel for their citizens.
The 2013 Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index – A Global Ranking of
Countries based on Freedom of Travel for their Citizens
In today’s globalized world, visa restrictions are an important tool for governments to
control the movement of foreign nationals across borders.
Visas are a standard requirement for most countries as certain non-nationals wish to enter their territory.
At the same time, visa requirements or the lack thereof, are also an indication of the
relationship between individual nations and the status of a country within the
International community of nations.
Henley & Partners, the global leader in international residence and citizenship
planning, has carefully monitored and analyzed visa regulations for many years.
Since 2006 Henley & Partners publishes the Henley & Partners Visa
Restrictions Index, a global ranking of countries based on the freedom of travel for
Their citizens. This global ranking is produced in collaboration with IATA. In
compiling the index, the unique global ranking methodology by Henley & Partners is
applied to data provided by IATA´s Timatic passport and visa information database.
The Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index contains the following assumptions:
There are 219 destination countries (territories) in total.
The maximum attainable score is 218 (one point is subtracted to account for a national traveling to their own country, with the exception of nationals who must hold a visa to re-enter their home country, and for nationals of countries not considered as a destination.
The latter group can therefore reach a max. Score of 219);
An index score of 172 means that a US passport holder, for example, may enter 172 countries and territories without a visa.
The score then determines the rank that a country occupies within the index.
This global ranking reflects the international freedom of travel for the passport holders of various nations, as well as the international relations and status of individual countries relative to others.
The list was created with regulations valid as of 1 July 2013
