Rape Law Congress Draft and Provisions Prevention of Sexual Atrocities against Women Bill
Media has reported that final draft regarding rape law, which Congress will submit to
Justice JS Verma-led Committee set up by the Congress Government is not ready yet but few recommendations or suggestions from that draft are as follows
1)
punishment of up to 30 years for rape convicts
2)
provision for chemical castration
3)
Setting up of fast-track courts with a 90-day deadline to finish proceedings
4-
Lower the age of Juvenile crime earlier it was 16 and currently it is 18
I support all the above 4 suggestions
The draft bill will be called as Prevention of Sexual Atrocities against Women Bill.
Once draft gets ready and Verma committee gives report after that Congress will bring ordinance regarding this.
The three-member committee headed by former Chief Justice J S Verma has been appointed by the government to review existing laws and suggest changes that would ensure faster justice and stringent punishment in cases of crimes against women.
Names of Committee members
1)
former Chief Justice J S Verma
2)
Justice (retd) Leila Seth
3)
former solicitor general Gopal Subramanian
Deadline for Committee is 30 days and Committee has sought public comments and suggestions by January 5.
