The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted permission to bury the mortal remains of late DMK leader M.Karunanidhi
DMK Chief and five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi breathed his last at Kauvery hospital in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 94.
"There has been a decline in the health of DMK president M Karunanidhi's due to age-related ailments. He is being treated for fever due to urinary tract infection. He is being given hospital level treatment at home," a medical bulletin released by the Kauvery Hospital said.
As per Kauvery hospital bulletin DMK Chief's time of death was 6.10 pm.

As a major controversy erupted on Tuesday night after the Tamil Nadu government declined DMK's request to allot space for burying the mortal remains of Karunanidhi near party founder C.N. Annadurai's memorial at the Marina Beach
Former chief minister M G Ramachandran and his protege J Jayalalitha were buried at the Marina beach and memorials to them were erected there. Both were bitter foes of Karunanidhi in politics.
A public Interest Litigation was filed in the Madras High Court seeking to restrain the Corporation of Greater Chennai from permitting any burial of bodies on the Marina Beach was withdrawn. the bench dismissed the petition as withdrawn. The petitioner had submitted that the coastal area of Marina was being turned into a burial ground, which not only spoiled the aesthetics but also endangered the ecosystem in and around the beach. She had sought a direction to the Corporation not to permit burials in the area. Despite such consequences, permission was given by the authorities for the burial of former chief ministers like C N Annadurai, M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa on the Marina, the petitioner said. If any further burials and resultant construction were allowed at the Marina, it would damage the environment

Karunanidhi entered the Tamil Nadu Assembly from Kulithalai in 1957. He was 37. He was treasurer of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in 1961 and leader of the Opposition in 1962. When DMK came to power in 1967, he got the Public Works portfolio.
Karunanidhi was chief minister of Tamil Nadu five times in over four decades. He became chief minister for the first time in 1969 when Annadurai died.
he also suffered many electoral defeats against top opponent M G Ramachandran’s AIADMK till his death in 1987.
His brief chiefministership in the 1980s was scuttled by the Centre when it dismissed his government on grounds of degrading law and order. He ruled the state for a full term from 1996, losing to AIADMK’s J Jayalalithaa in 2001. Karunanidhi was back to power in 2006
From 1957 to 2016, Karunanidhi has been sent to Assembly 13 timesn and once to the now abolished Tamil Nadu Legislative Council.

DMK working president and Karunanidhi's son, M K Stalin was made the party's working president in 2016 after Karunanidhi retreated from the mainstream politics.
Karunanidhi wrote scripts for over 50 Tamil films, focusing on historical and social reformist topics that furthered the nationalist ideals of the Dravidian movement. His ‘Parasakthi’ in 1952 is a watershed in Tamil cinema for espousing Dravidian ideology and also for introducing two acting pantheons – Gemini Ganesan and S S Rajendran.
Karunanidhi’s political career and cinema career grew hand in hand. A teen activist, he joined Periyar during the anti-Hindi protests. Noticing his oratory and his flair for language, Periyar and Annadurai asked him to address gatherings and made him the editor of Kudiyarasu, also allowing him to write for theatre. Karunanidhi, who hadn’t passed tenth grade, was making a living by writing scripts for theatre groups.
Karunanidhi wrote the screenplay for over 75 plays and even penned a TV series at the age of 92.
He wrote novels, biographies, poems, plays and essays. He also made a mark on architecture. In Kanyakumari, he constructed a 133-feet high statue of the scholar Thiruvalluvar.
The books written by Karunanidhi include Sanga Thamizh, Thirukkural Urai, Ponnar Sankar, Romapuri Pandian, Thenpandi Singam, Vellikizhamai, Nenjukku Needhi, Iniyavai Irubathu and Kuraloviam.
Karunanidhi's stage plays include: Manimagudam, Ore Ratham, Palaniappan, Thooku Medai, Kagithapoo, Naane Arivali, Vellikizhamai, Udhayasooriyan and Silappathikaram.
He has served as chief minister five times (1969–71, 1971–76, 1989–91, 1996–2001 and 2006–2011).
He married three times; his wives are the late Padmavathy, Dayalu and Rajathi.
He has four sons, namely M. K. Muthu, M. K. Alagiri, M. K. Stalin, and M. K. Tamilarasu and two daughters, Selvi and Kanimozhi. M. K. Muthu, his eldest son, was born to Padmavathy, who died early. Azhagiri, Stalin, Selvi and Tamilarasu were born to Dayalu, while Kanimozhi is the only daughter from his third wife, Rajathi.

Controversies -
In response to the Sethusamudram controversy, Karunanidhi questioned the existence of the Hindu God Rama. He said 'It is said that there was a God thousands of years ago called Ram. Do not touch the bridge built by him. I ask who is this Ram? Which engineering college did he graduate from?" His remarks caused a firestorm of controversy. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused Karunanidhi of religious discrimination when noting "We would like to know from Karunanidhi if he would make a similar statement against religious head of any other religion; chance are he may not.
