Public Sector Oil companies donate more than Rs. 121 Cr. Towards Statue of Unity

India’s leading public sector oil companies contributed over Rs. 121 crore towards the construction of the ‘Statue of Unity’ a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat—as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) spend during the fiscal year 2017.

‘Statue of Unity’ a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel India’s first home minister will be installed at the Sadhu Bet Island in Gujarat’s Narmada district, and will be the tallest statue in the world.

In October 2013, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the then Gujarat chief minister, laid its foundation stone. The project is proposed to be constructed at a cost of about Rs 2,989 crore with a targeted completion date of October 2018.

According to their annual reports, the country’s following four public sector oil companies recorded contributions towards the SOU project as part of their CSR activity in FY17.
1-Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC),
2-Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd (HPCL),
3-Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOCL)
4-Oil India Ltd

ONGC reported a contribution of Rs. 50 crore; OIL and HPCL of Rs. 25 crore each; and IOCL donated Rs21.83 crore.

three organizations Indian Oil Corporation, ONGC and Hindustan Petroleum, have together contributed over Rs 98 crore for the Statue of Unity project, which is two thirds the total spend in the heritage sector

The money which was spent by these companies on Statue was the money of tax payers, it was not their property, it was the property of all the Indian citizens.

By paying money for statue these companies wasted the money of tax payers.

India needs a law which will clearly say that No government will be allowed to build a statue using government money when millions of Indian citizens sleep without eating anything each day.
