3 Member SIT set up to reinvestigate 1984 anti-Sikh riots

The anti-Sikhs riots had broken out after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Of the 3,325 victims, 2,733 were killed in Delhi alone while the rest were killed in other states

a committee, headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd) G P Mathur, which was set up to look into the possibility of re-investigation of the 1984 riots.

Home Ministry-appointed a committee, headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retired) GP Mathur, submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh recommending fresh probe into the anti-Sikh riot cases through a SIT

After this now a three-member Special Investigation Team to probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots has been formed

Following are the names, members of SIT Special Investigation Team

1-
Senior IPS officer Pramode Asthana will head the three-member SIT - look after day-to-day functioning of the SIT

2-
Rakesh Kapur, a retired district and Sessions Judge – look after cases which went to court and chargesheeted but did not make any headway

3-
Kumar Gyanesh, Additional DCP with the Delhi Police - will probe FIRs which did not make any headway in probe.

The SIT will re-investigate all serious criminal cases of anti-Sikh riots of 1984, examine records of all police stations where the riots had taken place and also examine the findings of the Justice S D Jain and Justice D K Agarwal Committee.

The SIT will submit its report within 6 months.
