Three Hundred Ramayana’s: Five Examples and Three Thoughts on Translation", the essay Delhi University in row over Ramayana epic essay

After protests from Hindu hardline groups the essay by the well-known scholar AK Ramanujan was dropped from the history syllabus of Delhi University.

The article, essay "Three Hundred Ramayana’s: Five Examples and Three Thoughts on Translation", the essay has been part of the university's history course since 2006.
The article describes 300 different retellings of the epic story found in India and other Asian countries.

Since Year 2008 Hindu Groups opposed and protested that essay.

Critics of the essay argue that it refers to versions of the Ramayana which claim that Lord Ram and Sita were siblings and that the 10-headed demon king Ravana was Sita's father.

In the most popular version of Ramayana, written by the Hindu sage Valmiki, Ram and Sita were married and are held up as an ideal couple. Ravana, it says, desired Sita for himself, kidnapped her and held her hostage until Ram rescued her.

Following an order from the Supreme Court, an expert committee was formed to look into the issue.

Last week, three of the four committee members recommended that the essay should remain part of the syllabus.

But Delhi he university's academic council [which decides the syllabus] voted to drop the essay from the syllabus earlier this week.

We find it very unfortunate that a course that was included and passed by the history department... has been dropped," Mail Today newspaper quoted Professor Sunil Kumar as saying.

There are many versions of Ramayana which contradict each other.

This is another example where freedom of speech got curtailed.

If you do not agree with essay go study and publish your views and findings which will prove the article is wrong.

I always believe that religious things shouldnt be argued...as we say in hindi..shradha to astha aur vishwas ha tark nahi...

Why we have so many different versions and arguements about our religion only, why not people research others..its only because its Hindu only who are tolerant and some of them can always go beyond respecting their religion..do we have shortage of subjects to research...if not why dissect something which hurts the sentiments...this is not freedom of speech, its the misuse of freedom here.

Dharma is based on week pillors like making fool other's. Second thing is that, "KYA HUME AAJ BHI BINA ANKH SE DEKHE AUR DIMAG SE SOCHI YA BINA ANUBHV KIYE KISI BHI BAT KO SWIKAR KR LENA CHAHIYE?"

I want to appreciate Mr.Ramanujan for giving that excellent information about RAMAYANA. It will be the great achievement for Indian. Because some people think about us that Indian are traditional fool and have no acceptance of new information related to their epic or DHARMA.

CAN WE LET THE FACTS COME INTO OUR BELIEF (FAITH) SYSTEM ?! FOR HOW LONG WE ARE GOING TO HAVE FAITH ON SOMETHING WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH REAL WORLD AND FACTS, NOT EVEN HUMAN MIND CAN CONCEIVE SUCH STORIES. EITHER WE ARE FOOL OR JUST SIMPLY IGNORANT TO FACE THE REALITIES.
