Republic Day that is January 26, 1950.is a national holiday to mark the adoption of the
Constitution of India and the transition of India from a British Dominion to a republic.
It was this day in history in 1965 when Hindi was declared as the official language of India.
What does the Term Republic means?

• republic is a state without a monarch
• Citizens have an impact on its government
• The word 'republic' is derived from the Latin phrase res publica, which can be translated as "a public affair".
• The idea of a republic first appeared in the writings of Italian scholars of the Renaissance, most importantly Niccolò Machiavelli
• With no monarch, most modern republics use the title president for the head of state.
• If the head of state of a republic is also the head of government, this is called a presidential system.
• In India Legislature is dominant, got all the powers, the President is a rubber stamp.
• In parliamentary systems the head of government, is titled prime minister, he exercises the most real political power.

India got Independence on August 15, 1947.
But that time India did not have a permanent constitution, So India was following colonial Government of India Act 1935, thus all the laws were based and followed which were made by the British Rulers for their colony of slaves called as India,
That time George VI was the head of India and Earl Mountbatten was the Governor General.
On August 29, 1947 the Drafting committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution with
Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar as chairman.
The committee submitted draft constitution to the Assembly on November 4, 1947 that time assembly met in sessions was open to public and spread over a period of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days before adopting the Constitution for India.
After this the Constitution of India came into effect only on January 26, 1950.
The Indian National Congress had been celebrating January 26th as a symbol of Independence, even before India actually became independent.
I hope now you got the point why the date 26th was chosen as a republic day.
That choice of date was made at the 1930 Lahore session of the Indian National Congress,

To mark the Republic Day, a grand parade is held in New Delhi, capital of India, beginning from Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace), along the Rajpath, past India Gate and on to the historic Red Fort in the old quarter of the city.

The President of India, who is also the Commander in Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute.
Normally The Chief Guest of the parade is a Head of State of another country.
The event begins with the Prime Minister of India laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, commemorating all the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Soon, a 21 gun salute is presented, the President unfurls the National Flag and the National Anthem is played.
This marks the beginning of the parade.
