Facebook scans everything you send admits Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook scans pictures and links sent on its Messenger app to ensure they abide by company guidelines, it has been revealed, and any messages that are not in line with Facebook’s community standards are blocked.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the existence of the well-intentioned policy during a podcast interview with Vox’s editor, Ezra Klein.

According to Zuckerberg, the sensational messages were detected by Facebook systems and blocked.“In that case, our systems detect what’s going on. We stop those messages from going through,”

Facebook told Bloomberg that the Messenger scans are the same tools used across the entire platform to prevent abuse and to ensure content abides by "community standards," and that they are not scanning messages for the purpose of targeted advertising or other purposes.

In a statement, a Facebook Messenger spokesperson said: “For example, on Messenger, when you send a photo, our automated systems scan it using photo matching technology to detect known child exploitation imagery or when you send a link, we scan it for malware or viruses. “Facebook designed these automated tools so we can rapidly stop abusive behaviour on our platform.”

Observer revealed that the data analytics firm that worked with Donald Trump’s election team and the Brexit campaign acquired millions of profiles of US citizens and used it to build a software program to predict and influence voters. Facebook discovered the information had been harvested by a third party in late 2015, but failed to alert users at the time.
The data was collected through an app called thisisyourdigitallife, built by Cambridge University academic Aleksandr Kogan through his company Global Science Research in collaboration with Cambridge Analytica. However, the app also harvested the information of the participants’ friends, which allowed for the accumulation of data from tens of millions of Americans.

As part of the disclosure, Facebook for the first time detailed the scale of the improper data collection for Cambridge Analytica, a political data consultancy hired by President Trump and other Republican candidates in the last two federal election cycles. The political consultancy gained access to Facebook information on up to 87 million users, 71 million of whom are Americans, Facebook said. Cambridge Analytica obtained the data to build “psychographic” profiles that would help deliver targeted messages intended to shape voter behavior in a wide range of U.S. elections.

Mark Zuckerberg  will appear before the House energy and commerce committee on Wednesday 11 April.
