Windows 10 version 1511 will no longer receive security updates
After October 10, 2017, Windows 10 devices running version 1511 will no longer receive security and quality updates.
Microsoft recommends updating devices to the latest version of Windows 10 by visiting the Windows Security page and selecting Verify you’re updated to manually update your device.
Since version 1511 was released in November 2015, Microsoft has released additional feature updates that build upon each other, delivering the newest features and more comprehensive security.
Windows 10 was designed as a service, whereby feature updates are required a couple times a year. For most consumers, both quality and feature updates are delivered automatically according to their Windows Update settings.
How do I know which version of Windows 10 I'm running?
In the search box on the taskbar, type winver and then press Enter.
Command Name -Winver then press enter
This opens the About Windows dialog box, where you'll see the version of Windows 10 that's running on your device.
If your version is listed as 1511 (or an earlier version) in the About Windows dialog box, Microsoft recommends updating your device to the latest version of Windows 10.
How do I update my device?
For your personal device, Microsoft recommends visiting the Windows Security page and selecting Verify you’re updated to manually update your device. If your device does not update:
Make sure that your PC is connected to the Internet. And make sure you're using an unmetered network, because most updates won't be installed if you’re using a metered Internet connection.
If you don't have enough drive space to install the update, you might be able to free up drive space to accommodate it.
The Windows 10 system requirements page provides the minimum hardware requirements. If your PC meets or exceeds the requirements, use the Windows Update Troubleshooter to try to fix the problem.
If your device is running Windows 10 Enterprise edition or is managed by an IT professional, please contact your system administrator to update your device.
What happens if I continue to use Windows 10 version 1511 (or an earlier version)?
If you continue to use version 1511, your computer will still work, but since you won’t continue to receive new security updates or other quality updates, it could become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.
For this reason, Microsoft strongly recommend that you update to the latest version of Windows 10, as described above, and that you keep up to date thereafter.
Does end of service for version 1511 apply to all editions of Windows 10?
Windows 10 version 1511 end of service impacts the following editions of Windows 10:
Windows 10 Home
Windows 10 Pro
Windows 10 Education
Windows 10 Enterprise
Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for these editions after October 10, 2017.
