Rip Boxing Champion Muhammad Ali Dies

Muhammad Ali, three-time heavyweight boxing champion of the world and Olympic gold medalist died Friday night at a hospital in Phoenix, where he was living. He was 74.

Ali had been hospitalized with respiratory problems related to Parkinson's disease, which had been diagnosed in the 1980s.

Ali, born Cassius Clay, beat Sonny Liston in 1964 to win the heavyweight title but was stripped of his titles in 1967 when he refused to join the US Army and fight in the Vietnam War. He was banned from boxing until 1970 and in 1971 the US Supreme Court ruled in his favor in sitting out the war.

Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., in Louisville, at 6:35 p.m. on Jan. 17, 1942. His father, Cassius Sr., was a sign painter

His mother, Odesssa, worked as a household domestic.

In 1964 he became member of joined Nation of Islam which was also known as Black Muslims.

On February 7, just eighteen days before the Liston fight, a Miami Herald story quoted Clay’s father confirming that his son was a Muslim.

In June of 1965 he sought a marriage annulment from his first wife, a waitress from Chicago named Sonji Roi, less than a year after they married, because she did not conform to Islamic tenets like modest dress.
