Pakistan Parliament becomes first to run on Solar Power

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday inaugurated the ‘Green Parliament Project’ – a one megawatt of solar power plant – that will run Parliament on solar energy. Pakistan Prime Minister Sharif was accompanied by Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong

Pakistan parliament has become the first and only parliament Known as the Majlis-e-Shoora in the world to be run on solar power.

Solar Project plan was announced in 2014, the solar project has been funded by the Chinese government as an act of friendship, with the solar power plant costing around $55 million. China provided over US $55 million to carry out the project

The move is expected to save around $1million a year in bills.

According to speaker National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, the parliament solar panels will generate 80 MW power.

He said 62 MW will be sufficient for parliament while 18 MW will be given to national grid.

Israeli parliament Knesset is partly run on solar power.
Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, generates 10 per cent of its electricity from solar power.

India enjoys on average eight hours of sunshine a year, providing ample opportunity to harness the sun’s power.

The solar energy available in a year exceeds the possible energy output of all fossil fuel energy reserves in India.

Let us hope rich and political class in India will learn something from this and act towards increasing solar power use in India.

The Kochi airport in India runs fully on solar power. But yes, there is potential to run many more organizations using solar power. The solar modules are highly efficient nowadays.
