On September 1, 1965, Pakistan launched Operation Grand Slam, to attack India
India was already paralyzed from 1962 Indo-China war, Ayub Khan, former President of Pakistan believed that in such situation Pakistan will defeat India easily in war.

As the war was drawn out, across fronts in Kashmir and Punjab, the Indian Army managed to capture the strategic Haji Pir Pass.

From the point of view of war Haji Pir Pass is very important location.
Haji Pir Pass reduces the distance from Jammu to Srinagar through Poonch and Uri by over 200 km.

After 17 days of war , India and Pakistan decided to end the war.
War was called off during Tashkent declaration in 1966.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, the former Prime Minister of India and Ayub Khan, the former President of Pakistan signed the declaration after mediation by Russia and America.

Former Indian Pm  Shastri decided to return the Haji Pir pass to Pakistan in return of an undertaking by Pakistan to "abjure war and maintain peace."

Why it was returned to Pakistan is still mystery.

After that former PM Shastri also died in Russia , that is another mystery.

Who murdered Shastri thats important question.

India won the war in battle fied and lost the war on the paper.

However, I will give a clue. In military, you beat a man by physically killing or beating him other ways. Maybe make poor, powerless etc.
