Government Employees to use secure email Banned to use Yahoo Gmail

Indian Government has approved a proposal moved by Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) to establish a secure and encrypted email service for government officials.

DeitY Secretary R S Sharma told PTI that
We are in the process of implementing this. At present about a million officials are covered by it and we need to scale it to cover a total of 5 million employees. A budget of Rs 100 crore has been allocated for the project,
This process will be completed by March 2015,"

Media reported that government communication, barring those of Ministry of Defence and External Affairs, will be done using the NIC platform. While Defence Ministry has its own separate secure email server, the External Affairs too may follow suit.

Government aim is to make it mandatory for government offices to communicate only on NIC platform and not commercial email services Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail, etc.

In my interaction with Govt. officials, a few years back, most of them already used their own email server. A few of them were using gmail/yahoo unofficially, but good to know that they are all shifting to secure/encrypted mail servers shortly.
