Sabarimala-No Miracle Divine Flame or Divine Light Makaravilakku is lit by Humans

Sabarimala-No Miracle Divine Flame or Divine Light
Makaravilakku is lit by Humans

"Is the Makarajyothi man-made, the Kerala High Court asked on Thursday, about the phenomenon long associated with the climactic moment of the annual Makaravilakku pilgrim season at the Sabarimala shrine in Kerala?

Millions of devotees believe the fire they sight in Sabarimala is a divine.
The fire appears on Makara Sankranti day in mid-January every year.

Divine light or divine flame that flickers three times atop Ponnambalamedu hill opposite the Sabarimala shrine.
This flame or light is lit by human, the light is not magic or it’s not even natural phenomena.

The Ponnambalamedu is a thick forested area and is closely guarded by the State Forest Department and the Electricity Board. Nobody is allowed to go to the area.
Ponnambalamedu is about 4 Km away from the Sabarimala temple and very close to Kochupamba Power Substation which supplies power to Sabarimala.
It is under the control of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

Every year Millions of devotees visit to the Sabarimala temple.
These devotees, millions of gather or go to Hill to witness the divine light that pops up three times soon after the deeparadhana (the ceremony of showing lighted camphor to the idol of Ayyappa) at around 7 pm.
Every Year - January 14. It is on that evening – between 6.14 pm and 6.40 pm
All this miracle drama happens between 6 to 7 pm.
Gathering of people to watch the miracle.

Devaswom Board administers the temple and earns crores during the Jyothi season.
According to the figures provided by the Devasom, collections at the temple had crossed Rs.131 crore this year during this season of man made divine light.
Last season it was Rs.120 crore during the same period.

Kandararu Maheswararu Thantri, the traditional supreme priest at Sabarimala,
The thantri, who is often referred to as the senior thantri told that the Makarajyothi was a star in the sky and Makaravilakku was a traditional symbolic ‘deeparadhana' at Ponnambalamedu.
The Jyothi was a celestial phenomenon, but the Vilakku was a fire lit for the deeparadhana by people.
In the past, tribal families used to light this fire. Asked who lit the fire in the present times, the thantri said he was not in the know of such things.

The 84-year-old thantri mostly spoke through his grandson Rahul Easwar.
Mr. Easwar too professed ignorance about who lit the fire. Asked if the Travancore Devaswom Board was behind the Makaravilakku, which most Ayyappa devotees took for a divine phenomenon, Mr. Easwar said he was not aware of it.

Many Indians think that this light or fire was a miracle of God.
They did not even understand the difference between star and this fire; they used to think this fire is a star, its miracle.

It is believed by the devotees that the Makara Jyothi appears miraculously at Ponnambalamedu (believed to be the abode of Swami Ayyappan, the presiding deity of the Sabarimala temple) and is the celestial manifestation of the god Ayyappan himself.

But now this is very clear this flame or light is lit by human, the light is not magic or it’s not even natural phenomena.
Makarajyothi is different and Makaravillkku is different that's why there are two names.

Makarajyothi is a celestial star while Makaravillakku is symbolic lighting of lamp in place called Ponambalamedu, where there was a tribal temple earlier.''

Few Reports say that now there are no tribal people and the tribal temple has vanished and a huge concrete platform has been constructed.
Huge heaps of camphor are put into large bowls and lighted.
Soon, the flames are extinguished using large wet sacks.
After a few minutes, it is lit again and the process goes on for two more times.

In 2007 and 2008 this was exposed but this news did not spread widely.
From year 1981 people were trying to expose the truth, but now the temple administration has finally accepted and told the truth about light.

Try to remember the news which you heard in last 60 years on TV or radio I am sure you no one has ever dared to tell the truth; everyone said its divine light.

Still Educated and scientific people have to find out more about this another miracle
The appearance of `Garuda’ -- an eagle - is still a mystery.
The eagle escorts the Thiruvaabharanam (the box that carries the ornaments for Ayyappa) from the royal palace in Pandalam and then vanishes. It comes back then the ornaments are taken from Sabarimala to Pandalam.

sm, Thanks for this news. I am so surprised to read that such a simple difference between star and human lit fire was left unanswered for several years. I hope people stop rushing to witness such false miracles....130 crores in just one Makar sankranti season? I am shocked.

The crowd is increasing every year and they come from throughout India nowadays.

All the rules for following fasting, not taking outside food, for 40 days before visiting Ayyappa temple, etc. are diluted now. They follow the rules, sometimes, for as less as 3 days (!) and leave for Sabarimalai.

Nowadays, everyother person goes to Sabarimalai!

Yes, the light is man-made.

Sm,what you write is true, Many knew it was man made but nobody dared to say it in the open . Because of these reasons more and more are flocking to the temple and that too from other states.Even if it comes to light that it is man-made, now I don't think it will make a difference. Because one wants to witness the celestial event which is clearly seen during the worship and the eagle which appears during the Tiruvabaranam procession.
In the name of divinity one can easily do things to attract people. But this was in vogue for a long long time, but at that time there wasn't much of a crowd . Now slowly the word has spread and the crowd flowing cannot be stopped now.such is the faith and it cannot be erased fast.
Pamba river and Sabarimala is being dirtied by tonnes of garbage and it needs crowd managment policies.

I read in the paper SC asking the organisers to disclose that Jyothi was man made.

Hi SM,nice review on this subject. This issue is more highlited this time ;though it came into light a few years back and ignored.Hopefully ,this time ,the issue gets resolved and people stop gathering there to witness this particular event and go only for god's darshan. One of the blogger named Mr Balachandran also wrote on this subject and there was lot of debates there.Have a view.

I believe we should always explore human hand in miracles wherever it occurs, never discount prankster or fake gurus who propagate such phenomenon.

I find it very sad as people become blinded for religious things ...i was in Chennai during the time and there were scores of people going to this place .... and later the news of the stampede.
Really make one sad.
