25 Facts Short Biography of Manna Dey legendary Singer Watch  Manna Dey documentary Jiboner Jalsaghare

On 8th June 2013 he was admitted to the ICU in a Bengaluru hospital after his chest infection gave rise to other complications.
He is now in a critical condition

Parents –
Purna Chandra Dey was Manna Dey’s father and Mahamaya Dey was his mother.
Theirs was an orthodox joint family of North Calcutta, residing in the huge ancestral house at Simla, 9 Madan Ghose Lane.

Education –
He received his early education, in a small pre-primary school popularly known as Indu Babur Pathshala.
Thereafter he was sent to Scottish Church Collegiate School to complete both his schooling and intermediate studies.
He next got admitted to Vidya Sagar College for his graduations.

It was during his intermediate classes at Scottish Church College, Manna Dey’s singing talent became apparent.
Later he started taking singing lessons from his uncle Krishna Chandra Dey and from Ustad Dabir Khan. And it was at this period of time Manna Dey stood first for three consecutive years in three different categories of inter-collegiate singing competitions.

Year 1942-
He joined his uncle K.C. Dey in Bombay, to work  as assistant music director for H.P Das.
His first foray into playback singing was in Vijay Bhatt's "Ram Rajya but song did not became Hit.
Then he started to work with Sachin Dev Burman also.

Year 1943.
Film –Tamanna
The musical score was set by his uncle Krishna Chandra Dey and he had to sing a duet with Suraiya.
The song was  hit

He was working but he continued his learning training in Hindustani classical music under Aman Ali Khan and then under Ustad Rahman Khan.

Marriage –
Name of wife - He married to Sulochana Kumaran, on December 18th 1953.
Sulochana died in Bangalore on January 18, 2012. She had been suffering from cancer

Their first daughter Shuroma was born on October 19th, 1956
Their second daughter Sumita was born on June 20th 1958

Manna Dey teamed up with great singers like Bhimsen Joshi and belted out a legendary song known as "Ketaki Gulab Juhi".

With Kishore Kumar he sang a completely different genre of songs like "Yeh Dosti" (Sholay) and "Ek Chatur Naar" (Padosan)

Dey's Bengali language autobiography, Jiboner Jalsaghorey, has been published by the renowned Ananda Publisher in the year 2005 which has been translated in English as Memories Come Alive, in Hindi as Yaden Jee Uthi and in Marathi as Jiboner Jalsaghorey.

Jibaner Jalsaghore, a documentary on Dey's life, was released in 2008.
Manna Dey Sangeet Academy is developing a complete archive on Manna Dey.
In association with Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, the Manna Dey Music Archive has been developed in the Sangeet Bhawan.
