Plot -
Pyaasa tells the story of Vijay, a sensitive and idealistic poet whose verses reflect the harsh realities of society—poverty, unemployment, and human suffering.
Rejected by publishers for not writing romantic or commercially appealing poetry, Vijay is also scorned by his own family. His brothers fail to recognize his worth and even sell his poems as scrap paper.
Cast out and disillusioned, Vijay finds solace in Gulabo, a kind-hearted prostitute who sees the beauty in his words.
When he is mistakenly presumed dead after a tragic accident, his poetry is published and gains immense fame.
But upon returning, Vijay is denied recognition—his friends, family, and society refuse to accept him.
Branded insane and committed to an asylum, he ultimately escapes and confronts the hypocrisy of a world that celebrates the dead but rejects the living.
In the end, Vijay renounces fame and walks away from the materialistic world, choosing a life of quiet dignity with Gulabo—the only person who truly understood him.
