Tehelka investigation —

in 1990 when Gurmeet Ram Rahim, a 23-year-old Jat Sikh from a family of landlords in Rajasthan’s Ganganagar district, became as the head of a religious sect, the Dera Sacha Sauda, in Sirsa. He was a close associate of the dreaded militant, Gurjant Singh Rajasthani, of the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), which aimed at seceding Punjab from India. Gurjant Singh put a bullet through the forehead of Rahim’s predecessor, Param Pita Shah Satnam Singh Ji Maharaj. The new guru took the title Hazoor Maharaj Sant Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

Investigation –

First aired on India TV – has revealed that the Dera Sacha Sauda is a den of vice and Baba Gurmeet Singh guilty of rape and murder. Shortly after the story was broken, the CBI on July 31 filed its final chargesheets in three cases of murder and rape against the Baba in the special court in Ambala of Judge RN Bharti. The CBI, however, has not sought the arrest of Baba Gurmeet Singh. The chargesheets filed pertain to the murder of Dera manager Ranjit Singh, murder of Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and sexual exploitation of women in the Dera.

Khatta Singh, the Baba’s former driver who used to be part of his trusted inner circle, has admitted on Tehelka’s spy camera that the Baba raped a sadhvi and then had her brother, Ranjit Singh, killed. Khatta Singh, who is a CBI witness in the agency’s investigation against the Baba in three cases of murder and rape, also told Tehelka that he knew of at least seven murders committed by the Baba’s henchmen. He also said that sexual exploitation of the sadhvis living at the Dera’s premises was rampant, and there are several male followers who have been forcibly castrated on the Baba’s orders. Khatta said that a close aide of the Baba named Gurjot used to prepare a roster of girls who would “serve” the godman on any particular day. Many girls who refused to be so exploited were tortured.

When a sadhvi wrote an anonymous letter in 2002 to then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee accusing the Baba of sexual abuse (printed in Tehelka’s June 2, 2007 issue) the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered a CBI probe into the complaint. Since then, the CBI has filed three chargesheets against the Baba

On July 10, 2002, Dera functionaries allegedly shot dead their former colleague Ranjit Singh. He was suspected to have leaked an anonymous letter written to the PM by a sadhvi alleging rape by Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. As per the CBI chargesheet, Ranjit had been threatened by the accused. CBI had arrested Inder Sain, Avtar Singh, Kishan Lal Pradhan, Jasbir Singh and Sabdil Singh. Sabdil Singh and Jasbir Singh were lodged at the Ambala central jail.

12 February 2014

A sadhvi had in 2002 written an anonymous letter addressed to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, accusing the Dera chief of sexual abuse.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court took up the matter and ordered a CBI probe into the incident on September 24, 2002.

Rahim Singh is also facing two murder charges. He is accused of murdering a Sirsa-based journalist, Ram Chander Chatrapati, who had been writing about the Dera's activities. Chatrapati was shot on October 24, 2001 and died on November 21.

He was also accused of allegedly killing sect manager Ranjit Singh in July 2002.

According to CBI counsel HPS Verma, Singh has made more than 100 video conference appearances but not a single physical appearance in court, which is mandatory under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The Panchkula police, in a separate plea, had said the gathering of his followers could create a law and order problem and that he should be exempted from personal appearances.

Controversial godman and Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Insan, who is facing rape and murder charges, has told Panchkula court that he is not mentally and physically fit to have sexual intercourse.

"Dera chief told the court that he was not fit to indulge in physical relationships," S.K. Garg Narwana, counsel for Rahim, told mediapersons.

Rahim, who recorded his statement under section 313 of IPC through video conferencing, on Tuesday contended that the allegations levelled him were false and baseless.

August 8 2014 –
Court of district and session judge Tejwinder Singh on Thursday dismissed the case against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, which was lodged on May 20, 2007 for hurting Sikh sentiments.

However, the case was finally dismissed by Bathinda court, though in the ongoing proceedings the police had filed a cancellation report in the court on January 27, 2012 presenting an affidavit of Rajinder saying that he was ready to discontinue the case.

However, Rajinder challenged that it was a fake affidavit and hence the case had continued. Following this, Dera went to High Court in 2012, however the case was sent back to the lower court once again and on May 20, this year the court of chief judicial magistrate had summoned the Dera head for a personal appearance on August 8, 2014.

Following the summon, once again the Dera head filed an appeal before the session judge and today the judge dismissed the case. Advocates from Dera Sacha Sauda — SK Garg Narwana, Gurdas Singh Salwara and Kewal Brar — were present in the court personally. They said that the case was baseless as the police was not able to present challan in court within framed time and later they also presented cancellation report. Thus there was no point to continue the case.
