Inspired by a novel:
The movie is based on Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka, which tells the story of a young Kashmiri woman who becomes a spy for India during the 1971 war.

Casting:
Director Meghna Gulzar chose Alia Bhatt for the lead role because she could show both innocence and strength.
Vicky Kaushal was cast opposite her as the Pakistani officer she marries.

Filming:
Shot in Punjab, Kashmir, and Mumbai, with sets recreated to look like the 1970s.
Alia even learned Morse code and did some of her own stunts to make the role authentic.

Budget & success:
Made on a budget of about ₹35–40 crore, it earned over ₹190 crore worldwide, becoming one of the most successful female led films in India.

Awards:
Won Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress (Alia Bhatt) at the Filmfare Awards.

The film’s success proved that spy thrillers could work without big action sequences.

Raazi is a film inspired by a novel, made with careful casting and realistic details, and it became a huge success while telling a human story of sacrifice.

These lines are from the traditional Kashmiri wedding/bidaai song that was adapted for “Dilbaro” (Raazi).

“I am the darling daughter of the house, give me farewell, my dear brother.”

In traditional Kashmiri bidaai (farewell) songs, the bride often first speaks to her brother (boey / boy jaano).
The brother is the one who traditionally walks her to the doli or helps her leave the parental home.
That’s why the folk version of this song is sung to the brother.

This is a traditional Kashmiri folk bidaai song (Khanmoej Koor).
Only someone familiar with Kashmiri wedding customs and the original folk version would immediately know that the opening lines are addressed to the brother (boey / boy jaano).
In Kashmiri culture, the brother traditionally plays a very important role during the bride’s farewell  he is often the one who formally gives her leave and walks her out.
That’s why the original folk lyrics speak to him first.
Gulzar kept those authentic Kashmiri lines as they are (addressed to the brother) and then wrote the new Hindi verses addressing the father (“Baba…”).
So the song moves naturally from brother to father, which feels very emotional and true to the spirit of a bidaai.

Lyrics with English translation of song baba mai teri malika dilbaro

I am the darling / pampered daughter of the house,

Give me farewell / bid me goodbye, my dear brother

I am the darling / pampered daughter of the house,

Give me farewell / bid me goodbye, my dear brother

I am the darling / pampered daughter of the house,

You held my finger and taught me how to walk, didn’t you

This threshold is high, help me cross it

Father, I am your princess / queen

I am a piece of your heart

Once more, help me cross this threshold

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

Crops that are harvested do not grow again

Daughters who are married off do not return

Crops that are harvested do not grow again

Daughters who are married off do not return

If this is how the farewell is, if the separation is so long

Then help me cross this threshold of pain as well

Father, I am your princess / queen

I am a piece of your heart

Once more, help me cross this threshold

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

My beloved, the snows will melt again

My beloved, the crops will ripen again

May my prayers walk under your feet

May my prayers go with you

You held my finger and taught me how to walk, didn’t you

This threshold is high, help me cross it

Father, I am your princess / queen

I am a piece of your heart

Once more, help me cross this threshold

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

My beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

My beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

I am the darling / pampered daughter of the house,

Give me farewell / bid me goodbye, my dear brother

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

My beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved

My beloved

Don’t turn and look back, my beloved
