What is Civil Services Day?
Civil Services Day is celebrated every year on  April 21 in India to honor the dedication and service of civil servants like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS officers, and others. 
It’s a day for them to rededicate themselves to public service , reflect on their work, and share best practices.
Historical Background
The first Civil Services Day  was observed on  April 21, 2006 , under the leadership of  Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh 
The date was chosen because  on April 21, 1947  Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel , India’s first Home Minister, addressed the first batch of IAS officers at  Metcalfe House, Delhi
 In his speech, Sardar Patel described civil servants as the Steel Frame of India” , emphasizing their critical role in maintaining unity and governance across the country.
Who Are Civil Servants?
Civil servants are selected through India’s highly competitive  UPSC exams and work in services like:
 IAS (Indian Administrative Service)  
IPS (Indian Police Service)  
IFS (Indian Foreign Service)  
IRS (Indian Revenue Service)  
and many other central and state services
Their responsibilities include implementing government policies, maintaining law and order, and managing public resources and administration.

To motivate civil servants to maintain high standards of ethics and performance  
To reflect on achievements and analyze challenges
To promote innovation and good governance practices
To facilitate interaction between civil servants and political leadership
PM’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration
Each year, on Civil Services Day, the Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration  are presented to recognize the outstanding work of District Collectors, Central and State Government departments, and teams implementing key initiatives.
