Ne Zha" (2019), also known as "Ne Zha: Birth of the Demon Child" (Chinese: 哪吒之魔童降世; pinyin: Nézhā zhī Mótóng Jiàngshì), is a Chinese animated fantasy adventure film directed and written by Jiaozi (also known as Yu Yang).

It’s a visually stunning and emotionally engaging adaptation inspired by the Chinese mythological character Nezha from the 16th-century novel Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi) by Xu Zhonglin.

However, the film takes significant creative liberties, reimagining Nezha’s story with modern themes of family, identity, and defiance against fate.

Ne Zha" (2019), also known as "Ne Zha: Birth of the Demon Child," was a massive box office success.
It grossed over $703 million USD in China alone, making it the highest-grossing animated film in a single market at the time of its release.
Worldwide, its total box office haul reached approximately $729.8 million USD, according to data compiled from sources like Box Office Mojo and industry reports.

Plot Summary
The story begins with a Chaos Pearl, a powerful entity born from primordial forces, absorbing energy uncontrollably.
Yuanshi Tianzun, the Primeval Lord of Heaven, splits it into two opposing components: the Spirit Pearl and the Demon Orb.

The Spirit Pearl is destined to reincarnate as a human to aid in establishing a new dynasty, while the Demon Orb is cursed to spawn a destructive entity that will be struck down by heavenly lightning in three years.

Taiyi Zhenren, a disciple of Tianzun, is tasked with overseeing the Spirit Pearl’s reincarnation as the third son of Li Jing, a military commander in Chentang Pass, to be named Ne Zha.

However, Shen Gongbao, another disciple with ulterior motives, sabotages the plan by switching the pearls, resulting in Ne Zha being born from the Demon Orb instead.

Ne Zha emerges as a fiery, mischievous child with supernatural powers, feared and misunderstood by the townsfolk due to his demonic nature.

His parents, Li Jing and Lady Yin, hide the truth, raising him to believe he’s the Spirit Pearl’s incarnation destined to be a hero.

Ne Zha trains under Taiyi, mastering his abilities, but his impulsive nature leads to chaos—like accidentally burning a village while chasing a demon.

Meanwhile, Shen Gongbao has given the stolen Spirit Pearl to the Dragon King, who uses it to reincarnate his son, Ao Bing, hoping to elevate the dragon race from their role as Heaven’s imprisoned jailers.

As Ne Zha’s third birthday approaches—the day the heavenly curse will strike—the truth unravels.

At his birthday celebration, Shen reveals Ne Zha’s demonic origin, sparking rage and betrayal.

Ne Zha nearly kills his father but flees to face his fate alone.

In a climactic showdown, he confronts Ao Bing, who, under pressure from the dragons, attempts to bury Chentang Pass in ice.

Ne Zha defeats him but spares his life, calling Ao Bing his only friend.

When the heavenly lightning descends, Ao Bing joins Ne Zha, and together they absorb its energy using the Chaos Pearl’s power.

Their mortal bodies are destroyed, but their spirits endure, earning the townsfolk’s respect.

The film blends high-octane action, humor, and heartfelt moments. Ne Zha is a rebellious, hot-headed protagonist who defies his predestined role as a destroyer, famously declaring, “My fate is mine to control, not the heavens!”

This resonates as a story of self-determination and acceptance, bolstered by the unconditional love of his parents—especially Li Jing’s willingness to sacrifice himself.

The animation is breathtaking, with over 1,300 special effects shots crafted by more than 1,600 animators across 20 studios, creating vivid scenes like the fiery battles and the ethereal Dragon King’s Palace.

Reception and Impact
Released on July 26, 2019, in China (with a limited IMAX run starting July 13), "Ne Zha" became a cultural phenomenon. It grossed over $703 million in China alone, making it the highest-grossing animated film in a single market at the time, surpassing Disney’s Zootopia.

Globally, it earned praise for its bold storytelling and technical prowess, though its Western release (late August to September 2019) was more modest, pulling in about $4 million in the U.S. Critics lauded its fresh take on mythology, though some noted its dense lore might challenge viewers unfamiliar with the source material.

In short, "Ne Zha" is a dazzling, action-packed tale of a demon child turned hero, blending ancient myth with modern flair—a must-watch for animation and mythology fans alike.
