Ne Zha 2 (2025) movie breaks world records will it Replace Avtar to become No. 1
"Ne Zha 2" (2025), also known as Ne Zha: Mo Tong Nao Hai (哪吒之魔童闹海; Nezha: The Demon Child Stirs the Sea), is a Chinese animated fantasy action-adventure film that serves as the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster "Ne Zha."
Directed and written by Jiaozi (Yang Yu), it builds on the reimagined mythology of the character Nezha from the 16th-century novel Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi).
Released in China on January 29, 2025, during the Lunar New Year, the film has shattered box office records and elevated Chinese animation to unprecedented global heights.
Ne Zha 2 became the highest-grossing Chinese and non-English film of all time (surpassing The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021)).
It also became the highest-grossing film of all time in a single market (surpassing Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)) and became the first non-Hollywood production to join the billion dollar club (57th overall).
Plot Summary
The story picks up after the events of the first film, where Ne Zha and Ao Bing sacrificed their physical bodies to absorb the heavenly lightning, preserving their souls via the Chaos Pearl. Now, their spirits face dissipation unless their bodies can be reconstructed. Taiyi Zhenren, their immortal mentor, plans to use the mystical Seven-Colored Lotus to restore them, but the process is fraught with challenges. As Ne Zha and Ao Bing navigate their intertwined fates—being two halves of the same supernatural entity—they confront a new crisis: an invasion of Chentang Pass by Shen Gongbao, a vengeful demon, and a coalition of exiled dragons, including Ao Bing’s father, the Dragon King.
Ne Zha, still the brash, hot-tempered demon child (voiced by Lü Yanting), teams up with Ao Bing (voiced by Han Mo), who occasionally shares his body, leading to dynamic switches in form and personality.
Their journey takes them to Yuxu Palace to seek aid from Master Wuliang (voiced by Wang Deshun), battling sea monsters, dragons, and their own inner conflicts along the way.
The narrative weaves high-stakes action with themes of loyalty, identity, and rebellion against destiny, culminating in a visually spectacular showdown that tests their bond and resolve.
Production and Style
Produced by Beijing Enlight Pictures and Chengdu Coco Cartoon, "Ne Zha 2" reportedly cost 600 million yuan (about $80 million USD), making it China’s most expensive animated film to date.
It involved over 4,000 animators across 138 studios, doubling the workforce of the first film. With more than 2,400 shots—1,900 featuring special effects—the film pushes the boundaries of animation, delivering breathtaking visuals like the pagoda-laden Yuxu Palace and fluid, water-based combat sequences. Jiaozi balances wuxia-inspired heroics with earthy humor (think Ne Zha’s antics and an octopus demon grilling its own tentacles), maintaining the irreverent charm of the original while amplifying its scale.
Reception and Box Office
Released during China’s lucrative Lunar New Year holiday, "Ne Zha 2" exploded at the box office, earning 1.1 billion yuan ($137 million USD) in its first three days and surpassing 7.2 billion yuan ($958 million USD) by February 8, 2025, in China alone. As of March 31, 2025, it has grossed over $2.1 billion USD worldwide, with 98% of its revenue from China, making it the highest-grossing animated film ever, overtaking Inside Out 2 ($1.7 billion).
It’s also the first non-Hollywood film to cross $2 billion and ranks among the top five highest-grossing films globally, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Critics and audiences have praised its technical mastery, emotional depth, and cultural resonance, with Douban scoring it 8.5/10 and Maoyan at 9.7/10.
Its expected that soon movie will get released in many nations , and box office collections will keep rising
now question is will it become No. 1 Animation Movie defeating Avatar
