RIP Yahoo Messenger Shuts Down End of an Era

RIP Yahoo Messenger Shuts Down End of an Era
Yahoo has announced that it is shutting down the legacy platform of its chat service Yahoo Messenger
Yahoo! has announced that on July 17, it will officially shut down its long-running Messenger client and service.

Yahoo messenger was one of best communication software in 1999-2000
Yahoo Messenger was the first real platform for real-time communication that allowed options to send images and real-time updates and do video chatting with unknown people.

Yahoo! Messenger was originally launched under the name Yahoo! Pager on March 9, 1998.
It was renamed to Yahoo Messenger on June 21, 1999 and led to the revolution of instant messaging clients on PC. The service was provided free of charge since it relied on an ad-supported network.

Yahoo! Messenger offered file sending capabilities to its users. Files could be up to 2 GB each.
With Yahoo messenger ICQ was also very popular in those days. Just remembered ICQ while writing this post.

Yahoo messenger was very advanced in those days, since gmail, Facebook did not exist.

The activity of a person on Yahoo Messenger was associated with a color where green stood for available, red for not available and yellow meant busy. These colored status indicators continue to be used on other instant messaging and video calling platforms.

One of the best feature of Yahoo was Yahoo Chatroom where one was able to meet and talk with randomly with anyone, that was the phase when world was becoming a global village.
Even if you are from India, one met with European or American people vice versa.

Many people met on Yahoo and became great friends or life long partners.

One of the most common terminology on Yahoo Messenger was ASL, which stood for Age, Sex and Location. Most people decided whether to continue talking to a random person based on their response.

All current emojis and stickers existed on Yahoo Messenger

The Yahoo! Messenger Protocol (YMSG) is the underlying network protocol used by the Yahoo! Messenger instant messaging client. Yahoo! Instant Messenger supports many features beyond just messaging, including off-line messaging, file transfer, chat, conferencing, voice chat, webcams and avatars.
Yahoo in a statement said following, Yahoo Messenger will no longer be supported after July 17, 2018. Until then, you can continue to use the service normally. After July 17, you'll no longer be able to access your chats and the service will no longer work.
We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind. As the communications landscape continues to change over, we're focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.
There currently isn’t a replacement product available for Yahoo Messenger. We're constantly experimenting with new services and apps, one of which is an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel (currently in beta). You can request an invite at squirrel.yahoo.com.
