Sawan Kumar turned on a tape recorder, playing Mohammed Rafi's master track of "Meri Aawaz Suno".
The Lyrics:
Written by Kaifi Azmi from the perspective of a departed leader speaking from beyond the grave, the lyrics directly hit home.
The line "Maine ek phool jo seene pe saja rakha tha..." ("The flower that I used to wear on my chest...") was a direct, unmistakable reference to Pandit Nehru's iconic daily habit of pinning a red rose to his jacket.
