Panama Papers Effect Pakistani Ex PM Nawaz Sharif sentenced to 10 years in jail

Panama Papers Effect Pakistani Ex PM Nawaz Sharif sentenced to 10 years in jail
Sharif served as prime minister three times since 1990, his most recent term ending in 2017 when the Supreme Court ousted him over corruption allegations

In 2016, an International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) leak of 11.5m legal documents called as the 'Panama Papers' - showed the Sharif family had secured a $13.8m loan in 2007, using the apartments as collateral.

The former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption in a verdict

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Pakistan’s anti-graft court, ruled that Sharif and his family laundered money in the 1990s to pay for four luxury apartments in Park Lane, central London, drawing on allegations that resurfaced in the Panama Papers leak in 2016

The court also sentenced Sharif’s daughter and presumed political heir, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, to seven years’ imprisonment, fined the family £10m and ordered the seizure of the Avenfield properties.

Maryam received an additional one-year sentence for presenting forged documents in court

Her husband Muhammad Safdar was also sentenced to one year in prison, and will stand disqualified from running the upcoming polls.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam were also fined heavily by the court. While Nawaz Sharif will have to pay $10 million, his daughter has been fined $2.6 million.

The court also ordered that the apartments owned by Sharifs be seized and handed over to the Pakistani government.

In July last year, the supreme court removed Sharif from office and ordered the NAB trial, before barring him from politics for life.

Sharif remains banned from politics, but Friday’s verdict also disqualifies his daughter, who had emerged as a possible prime ministerial candidate.

The conviction also bars Maryam Sharif from contesting the July 25 elections,

The court said Nawaz and his family had failed to disclose the source of funds used to purchases luxurious London properties and had not reported them to tax authorities.

Currently Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Sharif are in London when both will return to Pakistan and go to jail is not clear.

Sharif told to media that he will return to Pakistan soon.

The Sharif family is expected to appeal Friday’s verdict at the Pakistan Supreme Court.

Once again Pakistani Court proved that its fearless and one of the great courts in asian region.
