UGC List of 29 Universities which will lose deemed University status
Supreme Court of India had directed the UGC to take appropriate steps and implement section 23 of the UGC at, 1956 and restrain Institutions Deemed to be Universities from using the word University.
Now UGC has sent letters to 29 universities to restrain from using the word University and submit compliance within 15 days.
On November 3, 2017 the Supreme Court had directed the UGC to stop deemed-to-be universities from using the word ‘university’. Following this, the UGC wrote to 123 deemed-to-be universities twice between on November 10 and 13, asking them to comply with the apex court order within 15 days.
The Section 23 of the UGC, 1956, clearly mentions, “No institution, whether a corporate body or not, other than a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act shall be entitled to have the word 'University' associated with its name in any manner whatsoever."
UGC notice said following, it has been decided to give a last chance to the Institution Deemed to be University to immediately discontinue with the name of the Deemed to be University using the word ‘University’ and revert back to the name which was notified by the Government of India. Failure to comply with these directions would amount to violation of the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016 and necessary action would be initiated against the Institution Deemed to be University in accordance with Clause 22.0 of these Regulations which may include recommending withdrawal of the declaration notifying the institution as an Institution Deemed to be University to the Central Government.
Below is the list of 29 deemed universities which will lose University status.
On November 29, 2017 UGC sent letter to following universities.
1.Lingaya’s University, Nachauli, Old Faridabad - Jasana Road, Faridabad - 121 002 Haryana.
2.Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Mullana, Ambala , Haryana.
3.Christ University, Hosur Road, Bangalore- 560 029, Karnataka.
4.Jain University, 91/2, Dr. A.N. Krishna Rao Road, V.V. Puram, Bangalore, Karnataka.
5.Yenepoya University, Mangalore, Karnataka
6.SYMBIOSIS International University, Senapati Bapat Road, Pune-411 004, Maharashtra.
7.Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar-249 404, Uttrakhand.
Again on same day that is November 29, 2017 UGC sent notice to following 22 Universities
