Mumbai Municipal Election 2017 Analysis of Criminal Financial Background of Candidates

Analysis of Criminal Background, Financial and other Details of Candidates

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch have analyzed the self- sworn affidavits of 1641 out of 2275 candidates, who are contesting in the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) Elections, scheduled to be held on 21st February, 2017. There are total 227 seats spread across 227 wards. The rest of the affidavits were not analyzed as they were not available or uploaded on the website.

Candidates with Criminal Cases: 216 (13%) out of 1641 candidates analyzed have declared criminal cases against themselves

Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 154 (9%) out of 1641 candidates analyzed have declared serious criminal cases against themselves

Party wise candidates with declared criminal cases:
a- 41 candidates (24%) out of 173 candidates from Shiv Sena

b-19 candidates (11%) out of 171 candidates from Indian National Congress

c-39 candidates (25%) out of 154 candidates from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena

d-23 candidates (15%) out of 151 candidates from Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)

e-19 candidates (14%) out of 132 candidates from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)

f-5  candidates (7%) out of 71 candidates from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)

g-5 candidates (8%) out of 60 candidates from Samajwadi Party

h-3 candidates (7%) out of 45 candidates from All India Majlis- e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM)

i-4 candidates (11%) out 36 independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves

a-28 candidates (16%) out of 173 candidates from Shiv Sena

b-16 candidates (9%) out of 171 candidates from Indian National Congress

c-22 candidates (14%) out of 154 candidates from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena

d-14 candidates (9%) out of 151 candidates from Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)

e-16 candidates (12%) out of132 candidates from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)

f-4 candidates  (6%) out of 71 candidates from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)

g-4 candidates (7%) out of 60 candidates from Samajwadi Party

h-2 candidates (4%) out of 45 candidates from All India Majlis- e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM)

i-2  candidates (6%) out 36 independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Crorepati Candidates:
Out of the 1641 candidates analyzed, 489 (30%) are crorepatis.
Average Assets: The average assets per candidate analyzed for this election, is Rs. 1.93 Crores.

Candidates with High Income as declared in ITR*: Only 13 out of 1641 candidates have declared their total annual income of more than Rs. 50 Lakhs

Age Details of Candidates: 71 candidates have declared their ages to be between 21 to 24 years. 1211(74%) candidates have their age to be between 25-50 years while 359(22%) candidates have declared their age to be between 51-80 years

Gender Details of Candidates: Out of total 1641 analyzed candidates, 848(52%) are men whereas 792 (48%) are women
