President Pratibha Patil makes a record using president’s power regarding death punishment

President Pratibha Patil rejected mercy petitions of five people who had committed heinous crimes, including the killers of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

 Power of President -

Article 72 in The Constitution Of India 1949

72. Power of President to grant pardons, etc, and to suspend, remit or commute sentences in certain cases

(1) The President shall have the power to grant pardons, reprieves, respites or remissions of punishment or to suspend, remit or commute the sentence of any person convicted of any offence

(a) in all cases where the punishment or sentence is by a court Martial;

(b) in all cases where the punishment or sentence is for an offence against any law relating to a matter to which the executive power of the Union extends;

(c) in all cases where the sentence is a sentence of death

President Pratibha Patil  has commuted the death sentence of 35 people to life imprisonment, the highest by any head of state in three decades.

President Pratibha Patil is the first female President of India.

On June 2, Patil gave her pardon to four

1.
Bandu Baburao Tidke from Karnataka

2.
Buntu from Uttar Pradesh

3.
Lalchand alias Laliya Dhoom

4.
Shiv Lal from Rajasthan

On February 9, she accepted the clemency petition of Sushil Murmu, pending since 2004, who was convicted for giving 'bali' (sacrifice) of a nine-year-old-boy in Jharkhand for his own prosperity.

Almost all the convicts pardoned are guilty of the most blood-curdling crimes.

By pardoning so many criminals President Pratibha Patil has made a record.

Suggested Reform –

I do not support capital punishment but India is not ready and matured nation like develpled world so We need to give capital punishment

It should be compulsory for the President of India to act on the merci petition within 90 days or 3 months.
If President does not use the power of granting pardon in 90 days or 3 months then Jail authorities should hang the criminal without waiting for the Presidents  yes or no.

Currently Majority times politicians including president first think about the voting and after that they decide on any policy including merci petitions.

Go with the wind and win the  votes
Votes are important not the honesty and future of India.

Unfortunately, it is true that politicians mostly think about votes when disposing of mercy petitions.

Good suggestion of yours that there should be a time limit to decide on mercy petitions.
